What is AmeriCorps?

AmeriCorps is a non-profit volunteer organization, like the Peace Corps, but they serve only in US states and territories. There are several organizations under the "umbrella", including State and National and AmeriCorps VISTA. I am applying to AmeriCorps NCCC.

AmeriCorps NCCC is a residential program. This means I will be living in a dorm on a campus (either in Colorado, Maryland, Iowa, California, or Mississippi - they are assigned randomly). I may work any day of the week, totaling approximately a 45-50 hour workweek, with a team of 8-12 members, all between the ages of 18 and 24. Depending on the campus, there may be kitchens that I can cook in or simply a dining hall (mmmmmmm, DFAC! lol ;D).

My team will participate in 4-5 projects during ten months. Three of these projects will be "spikes", which means we will temporarily relocate to complete projects off campus. Service projects address community needs in these areas: Natural and Other Disasters, Infrastructure Improvement (contributing to the safety and well being of community members through repairing and building structures), Environmental Stewardship and Conservation, Energy Conservation, and Urban and Rural Development.

I will receive two breaks: About 2 weeks off in July, and a long weekend in September. Transportation to or from my vacation spot will not be provided and the campus will remain open so I can choose to stay there. I will be required to wear a uniform, which will be provided, at all times.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

1) Apply online
2) Receive acknowledgement packet
3) Call toll-free number, respond to questions about willingness to participate in all areas
4) If successfully clear pre-screening, will be notified of the day app will be assessed
5) If recommended for service, will be placed on waitlist of eligible applicants
6) Respond within 10 days of receiving status packet with physical/mental health paperwork and fingerprint card
7) Positions are filled by randomly selected approved applicants on the waitlist and sent an acceptance letter

I am waiting on step 7. The first round of acceptance letters goes out the first week of September, but I can be accepted at any time up until the beginning of the term. Kinda crazy that in end, its all random lol!! *bites nails*

Pray for me!!! :)))
